PLASTIC SURGERY

By presenting this site to you I tried to show you the plastic surgery world and plastic surgeons’ point of view. The one who is performing his own profession knows his profession’s needs and reflects it to his job. Everything could seem different by those who are out of this topic but people work in the same type of job talks in different language even if it is not a secret.

Those that I write generally show my applications and my approaches in this branch but other doctors can make distinct approaches. Remember that this is a branch of medicine which there is no certain boundary between right and wrong, but personal approach is important.

THE LADLE EAR SURGERY

Ladle ear is usually supposed as the ear which is bigger than normal. However it is not true. There is no difference in size between a person who has ladle ears and who has normal ears. The problem is only about the shape of the ear cartilages.
Where is the problem in ladle ears?
The problem is in two areas:
1. The angle between the head and ear might be wider than it should be. This shows the ear like open. Especially when looked at the back it appears so obvious.
2. The curves which should be in the upper half of the ear are not formed and ears look totally flat like ironed.

How is the surgery performed?

In the surgery a cut is performed right behind the ear. Just because this remains at the back side, I can say no surgical sign stays. All the procedure can be implemented here.
The surgery is usually performed by local anesthesia and there is no suture which should be taken back after the surgery.
For the recovery period we can say 1 week as realistic but you can discharge at the same day and there is no inconvenience to go out. You may possibly have a shower 2-3days later.

THE COMPLICATIONS AND PROBLEMS THAT MAY OCCUR

The bleeding risk which exists in almost all the surgeries is valid for this one also. But because there is no serious vain in ears this bleeding is most like blood accumulation called ‘hematom’.
Infection in ear is a complication is something that we are afraid of. The ear cartilage is rarely infected but when it is infected the infection disperses very fast and it might disrupt the shape of the ear.
One of the leading problems is asymmetry. There is asymmetry in almost all the patients’ ears before the surgery and it is already hard to fix it. But you can undergo this surgery by symmetric ears and you are able to have asymmetric ears after the surgery.
One other problem is that the ears are got closed to the head excessively. I can say it like the ears which are fixed more than it is required. In my opinion, it is better to have inadequately fixed ears instead of too much fixed ears. In other words, your ears look more natural when they seem open like a ladle instead of they seem like they are pasted to the head.
The bad possibilities that I explained above are of course in very rare cases. This surgery generally gives very good results and the patients are very pleased by the results.

   









TIPS

This is a small surgery. You do not have to faint in the surgery you can undergo with local anesthesia. I do not recommend you to have this surgery in the conditions of consulting room though.
There is probably no suture that is necessary to be taken after the surgery. You can have a shower in a few days and you can be back at work or in school after 1 week maximum.

THE REPORT OF THE SURGERY

Anesthesia: General or local.
Where should the surgery be performed: In an operating room of a hospital.
The duration of the surgery: 1-1.5 hour.
The duration of rest in the hospital: Can be dismissed at the first day.
The ache and pain after the surgery: There can be a little ache in first few days. Usually it is sufficient to take painkillers by mouth.
Tumescence and lividness: Between 3-7 days the ears tumefy and the sides of the ear are clean a little bit.
Dressing for the wound: Only dressing will be taken away and there is nothing can be called as dressing.
Sutures: this surgery can be performed without sutures that must be taken away.
When can be back at work: 2-7 days
Sports: After 2 weeks long joggings, after 2 weeks, sports, basketball, boxing and the sports that are done by body to body after 5 weeks.
The last shape: The ears are taken the shape after the surgery if you neglect the tumescence. But it is better to say 4-6 weeks though.
